  Field Coat

Do you dodge bears on your morning commute? Are the fish in your local river big enough for kindergarten? Is DEET your aftershave? If you answered yes, we have something just for you. The Field Coat is the safari jacket for the north woods. It reaches to mid thigh to shield your whole torso, and most of your legs. Each is a generously sized, fully articulated parka made from tightly woven Oilskin. It's an ages-old solution to wet weather. Take a strong base fabric, in this case an Oxford weave of cotton with nylon in the fill, and completely saturate it with a secret mixture of oils and waxes that repel water like the feathers of a duck. It's not a laminate, so it won't separate when the glue gives out. And it's not a coating that will flake off. Best yet, when it starts to give out, you just re-treat it.

Our Field Coat is cut long to protect your rear end and thighs. The adjustable hood has a stand-up visor to shield your glasses. It adjusts for depth, and cinches down around the face. The waist has an internal draw cord and loops for belts up to 2" wide. Belts are available on request. Low profile chest pockets open from the center so you can still use them when wearing a pack or a sling. The bellowed pockets on the skirt will swallow a whole box of shells, a hat, and a sandwich. We line each Field Coat with rugged Supplex nylon, which dries quickly and slides over your inner layers. When it starts to take on personality, turn it inside out, wash the lining with mild soap, hose it off, and hang it up to dry.   Inside the front you'll find a zippered security pocket for your keys, wallet, or electronics.

The main zipper is set outside the textile, not buried inside layers of fabric. When it wears out, we strip it off and stitch a new one in place without opening a seam. The zipper stops short of the chin and hem, leaving snaps to absorb all the abuse that cripples other garments. Our snaps are well spaced so you can rely on them to adjust your ventilation, cover up quickly, and access you inside layers. (You may never use the zipper.) We use hook and loop tabs on the wrist. They're stitched through all the layers of textile for easy replacement. All our metal components are stainless steel anchored in webbing, so they won't pull out. What's more, you can replace most of our hardware without breaking a stitch. Each Field Coat comes with a small repair kit containing snaps, shock cord, cord locks, hook/loop tape, zipper pulls, thread, and replacement zipper stops. Add your own needle and small scissors, and you'll be able to fix most of what ails you in camp.
