Shell Layers Field Coat:    Sewn right in Duluth, MN.
Arctic Anorak

We craft the Field Coat without all the hoopla of more popular brands. It's a generously sized, fully articulated parka with the pleasing heft of rugged 10 ounce Oilskin. What sets it apart from the hundreds of other foul weather shells on the market is the expected life span. The main zipper is set on top of the fabric, not buried inside the seam. When it wears out, just strip it off and stitch on a new one. The zipper stops a few inches short of the hood and hem, leaving rugged snaps to absorb all the abuse that cripples other garments. We also use snap on the cuffs because they never clog with debris.

The hood has a conservative fit to shed rain without swallowing your head. Two straps on the sides adjust the depth for better vision. We stitch interior and exterior hang loops to each other through a reinforced portion of fabric at the neck. There's a draw cord at the visor, and one on the hem to close the elements out. The low profile chest pockets close with snaps, and hold essentials where you can reach them while wearing a pack. The zippered hand pockets swallow larger items. Long underarm zippers let you customize your ventilation. You can pass your arms through the openings and clip the wrists together behind your back to wear the coat like a vest.

The Field Coat is meant for everyday rainy weather, but more importantly it's built to endure repeated cycles of wetting and drying. Unlike high performance synthetic shells, we use simple seams that won't trap pockets of water or promote bacterial growth. Though some stitching passes through both the shell and lining layers, the emulsion coating of our Oilskin seeps into every thread over time. You can replenish the oils and waxes yourself, so the outer textile will keep working for decades. When your coat starts to take on personality, simply wash the nylon liner with a sponge and mild soap. All grommets and snaps are made from rugged stainless steel. They'll never rust, crack in cold weather, or pull out, because each one is anchored in a patch of nylon webbing. What's more, you can replace most of our hardware without opening a seam. Each Field Coat comes with a small repair kit containing 2 meters of shock cord, cord locks, zipper pulls, thread, and replacement zipper stops. Add your own needle and small scissors, and you'll be able to repair almost any component in camp.

Fabric: 10 ounce Cotton Canvas impregnated with oils and waxes. Lining: Black 100% Supplex Nylon. Color: Dark Olive Green. Sizes, XS-XXL. See our Arctic Anorak or Permafrost Parka for sizing information.
